Centre for Learning β Skill Forge Program
Learning by Making, Creating and Doing
Skill Forge is a hands-on learning programme at Kalpavrikshalaya that gives children opportunities to explore skills beyond the regular classroom environment. The programme is rooted in the belief that children learn deeply when they are given the opportunity to work with their hands, engage with real materials, solve problems and create something of their own.
Learning by Making, Creating and Doing
Skill Forge is a hands-on learning programme at Kalpavrikshalaya that gives children opportunities to explore skills beyond the regular classroom environment.
The programme is rooted in the belief that children learn deeply when they are given the opportunity to work with their hands, engage with real materials, solve problems and create something of their own.
π‘ From Ideas to Making
Skill Forge provides experiences that take children from an idea to a tangible outcome. They may explore different materials, tools, techniques and processes while learning to plan, experiment, modify and complete a piece of work.
The emphasis is not simply on producing a finished product. The process itself becomes the learningβunderstanding how something works, making choices, encountering challenges and finding ways to work through them.
π¨ Developing Practical Skills
Through hands-on experiences, children develop skills such as:
- β working with different materials and tools
- β measuring, cutting, joining and assembling
- β planning and sequencing a task
- β developing hand-eye coordination and precision
- β experimenting with different methods
- β identifying and solving problems
- β caring for and using tools responsibly
- β working independently as well as collaboratively
π― Creativity with Purpose
Skill Forge creates space for children to explore their own ideas rather than follow a predetermined model each time.
Children are encouraged to experiment, make mistakes, rethink their approach and discover that there can be more than one way to arrive at a solution. Creativity is therefore connected with purpose, process and problem-solving.
π¨ Craft, Design and Everyday Skills
The programme may draw from a range of practical and creative areas such as craft, making, basic design, construction, working with natural and recycled materials, simple tool work, food-related skills and other age-appropriate practical experiences.
The experiences evolve with the age and readiness of the children, allowing younger children to explore basic processes while older children take on more complex projects and greater responsibility.
Learning Through the Process
Skill Forge encourages children to slow down, observe, attempt, refine and complete.
A piece of work that does not turn out as expected becomes an opportunity to ask:
In this way, Skill Forge nurtures not only practical skills, but also patience, persistence, resourcefulness and confidence in one's ability to work things out.
